Bligh’s jobs promise sinks as Qld’s unemployment remains highest in nation

Queensland’s trend unemployment rate of 5.8 per cent continues to be the highest in the nation as the Bligh Labor Government’s breadwinner jobs target looms as another broken promise, the State Opposition said.

LNP Shadow Treasurer Tim Nicholls said while the other resource rich state Western Australia continued to streak ahead with low unemployment, the Bligh government’s failures had left Queensland with the highest unemployment rate in Australia.

“Australia’s worst Treasurer Andrew Fraser will try to furiously spin that they are within sight of their jobs promise by including part time jobs but the reality is Labor promised 100,000 jobs for 100,000 breadwinners*,” Mr Nicholls said.

“So far only 51,300 full-time breadwinning jobs have been created.

“Labor are 48,700 full-time jobs short of their election promise and their attempts to claim part-time work as breadwinner jobs shows how out of touch they are with Queensland families struggling to cope with the increasing cost of living.”

The ABS figures showed 144,100 Queenslanders were now unemployed – 28,300 people more since the last state election.

"The biggest risk to Queensland’s economic recovery is another three lost years of Anna Bligh and Labor,” Mr Nicholls said.

“While Labor is putting all its eggs in the mining basket, a CanDo LNP Government will grow a four pillar economy centred on construction, tourism, agriculture and resources to get Queensland back on track.”
